spooky stories

Here are a pair of links to a ghostly story first reported in the New York Times in November, 1886 and again in January, 1887. The articles are made all the more entertaining by the journalist's sardonic slant. I'm guessing he wasn't any too convinced of the ghost's authenticity.

The Woman in Black: A Spectre that Haunts the Pennsylvania Coal Regions

The NYT archive, by the way, is just the loveliest thing. You can get lost in it and waste unheard-of amounts of time. Alas.

Did anyone stay up till two, watching Ghost Adventures Live? Most fun ghost-hunting show ever.

I caught my first evp just last month, in Ashcroft, Colorado, the mining camp that's now a ghost town of old cabins in a quiet valley. I was alone with my digital recorder running while I asked a few questions. I didn't hear any answers then, but when I played it back later, I heard a reply, a soft, almost wistful "yeah", when I asked if he'd made good friends in the camp. Now I'll always wonder who he was and what his life was like.

Our little neighborhood raised $325,000 on Sunday night for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

I want to say heartfelt thanks to Elisa Rolle ([info]elisa_rolle) and to Rose Maria Mazza for their online donations in support of Light the Night. It was really sweet of you. I'd like to hug you both.

eta: My thanks to Cat Grant ([info]bittermint) for her generous donation. A hug for you too, Cat!

Have you ever noticed

When you splurge on a big pile of books, you feel a sort of dreamy, contented afterglow--something like being pleasantly drunk?
I just bought a pile (18 books! fiction and non-fiction and lots of interesting 18th and 19th century diaries) and not even the tinge of guilt over money spent can overcome the happy anticipation of receiving them.

Thanks for coming by. I'm sorry there isn't much here. I'm a private person and find blogging difficult to do.
If there's something you'd like to talk about or anything you want to ask, you're welcome to contact me.

And if you bought a copy of Whistling, thank you. Your support of cancer research means more to me than I can begin to say.
